The GSO standards that actually bite

GSO 9 governs the labelling of prepackaged foodstuffs, locally produced or imported, offered for retail, and applies in addition to any labelling requirements in the product’s own standard. The current edition is GSO 9:2022, a Gulf Technical Regulation; earlier editions from 1995, 2007 and 2013 are still cited in circulation, which is precisely why the edition matters.

Most label rejections are GSO 9 problems rather than exotic ones: a mandatory particular missing, an Arabic requirement unmet, or a declaration that does not match what is in the pack.

GSO 2750 is the nutritional labelling standard for prepackaged food, current edition GSO 2750:2024. It sits alongside GSO 9 rather than replacing any part of it: GSO 9 governs the label as a whole, GSO 2750 governs the nutrition declaration on it.

It is the standard behind the panel on the back of the pack, and behind the question a laboratory is most often asked to answer: can these declared values be evidenced.

GSO 839 covers food packages and their general requirements — metal, glass, plastic, paper, carton, textile and wood — and stresses that packaging must protect the integrity and wholesomeness of the food. The current edition is GSO 839:2021; the 1997 edition is still widely referenced.

For plastics specifically, GSO 1863:2013 covers plastic food contact materials and has been formally adopted across the GCC member states. Packaging is the compliance area manufacturers most often treat as somebody else’s problem, usually the supplier’s, right up until a migration question is asked.

GSO 1016 sets microbiological criteria for foodstuffs and for food ingredients used as raw materials, with limits drawn from the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods and international food safety standards. The current edition is GSO 1016:2015, and it sets limits by food category — dairy, meat, fish, eggs, canned foods, beverages and others.

This is the standard that answers "what count is acceptable" when a customer specification does not say. If you test microbiologically and report against a limit, this is very often the limit.

Contaminants and toxins in food and feed are addressed through SFDA.FD CAC 193, the Saudi adoption of the Codex general standard. Maximum residue limits for veterinary drugs sit separately under GSO 2481 — a distinction worth holding, because the two are frequently conflated and they cover different substances entirely.

Pesticide residues, mycotoxins and heavy metals each have their own limit sources depending on the commodity. Where a limit governs a release decision, name it in the request: a result reported against the wrong limit is a result you cannot use.

A contaminant result without its limit is a number. With the limit and its source, it is a decision.
