What this is, and why it matters

Mass calibration checks a balance against reference weights of known value across the loads it is used at. A competent calibration is considerably more than one weight on the pan: repeatability establishes whether the same load gives the same reading, eccentricity establishes whether the reading changes when the load sits off-centre on the pan, and linearity establishes whether the error is consistent across the range or grows at one end of it. Weights and weight sets are calibrated as instruments in their own right.

Balances drift, and they drift quietly. An analytical balance in a laboratory, a checkweigher on a filling line and a platform scale at goods-in are each making decisions with money or safety attached — declared net weight, the dose of a preservative, the mass that a test method depends on. Because the error is invisible in normal use and the instrument keeps producing confident numbers throughout, calibration at a defined interval is the only thing standing between a slow drift and a very large number of affected packs.

When you need it

You declare a net weight

Fill weight is both a legal declaration and a commercial one. A checkweigher reading low is giving product away on every pack; one reading high is a labelling exposure on every pack. Neither announces itself.

A balance feeds a test method or a recipe

Any weighing that feeds a laboratory result, a preservative dose or a batch recipe carries its own error forward into everything calculated from it.

The scheme requires a documented interval

Weighing equipment intervals are checked in nearly every quality and food safety audit, and it is the repeatability and eccentricity data that distinguishes a real certificate from a sticker with a date on it.

How it works

  1. Identify the instrument and the range you use

    Balance type, capacity, readability, and the loads you genuinely weigh at. Test loads are selected around your working range, because a balance calibrated only at full capacity says nothing about the small weighings most laboratories actually live on.

  2. Coverage confirmed against the accredited scope

    The laboratory confirms whether your instrument and range sit inside the accredited scope before quoting. Where they do not, that is said plainly rather than quietly absorbed — the scope annex is published on this site precisely so the boundary is checkable.

  3. Measured as found, before any adjustment

    The as-found reading is recorded first, always. It is the only evidence of whether the measurements you have already taken and acted on were sound, and adjusting the instrument before measuring it destroys that evidence permanently.

  4. Certificate issued against traceable references

    The certificate reports repeatability, eccentricity and linearity as separate results, each measured value with its uncertainty, and the reference weights used with their traceability — not a single pass line covering all of it.

Common questions

Mass and balances

Do I need to stop using the balance while it is calibrated?

Yes, for the duration of the work — a balance is calibrated where it stands, because moving it changes its behaviour. The laboratory confirms scheduling in writing so the downtime lands when it hurts least.

Is your mass calibration accredited?

Yes — mass is within the laboratory’s SAAC-accredited calibration scope under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, certificate N-C-00592. The certificate issued for your instrument states whether the specific work performed falls inside that scope.

The balance was adjusted — do my old results still stand?

The as-found data answers that. If the balance was within your tolerance as found, results from the previous interval stand; if it was not, you know exactly which period and which measurements to review. This is why as-found is reported first, before any adjustment.

My daily check weight reads fine — do I still need calibration?

The daily check catches gross failure between calibrations; it does not establish accuracy, and it carries no uncertainty. Calibration against traceable references, with uncertainty stated per point, is what makes the balance’s readings defensible. The two work together — neither replaces the other.

What does the uncertainty per point mean?

It bounds each reported result. Compare it to the tolerance your weighing needs to hold — if the uncertainty is large against that tolerance, the calibration cannot prove compliance at that point, and it is better to learn that from the certificate than from a customer complaint.
